Traditionally, a player is drafted in the Major League Baseball draft. They then attend spring training and are assigned to one of the teams minor league clubs. Some players are signed as minor league free agents if they are not drafted. Foreign born players simply sign with a major league club and are again assigned to one of its 6 or 7 affiliates.
