Born in circa 1355, Owain Glyndwr is considered to be a major national hero in Wales, where he led a revolt against the English. Glyndwr was even proclaimed the Prince of Wales in 1400 by a group of Welch rebels. The rebels aimed to remove the English from their country, which had been under English rule since the thirteenth century.
In a somewhat unusual move for his time, Owain Glyndwyr established an independent Welch parliament. He later used his support in Wales to attack the English rulers in the northern regions of the country.
Despite their efforts, Glyndwr and the Welch rebels were not successful in their attempts to regain independence. King Henry IV was able to regain control over the towns he had originally lost during the rebellion and by 1408 the uprising had been crushed. Although Glyndwr was never actually captured by the English, he was forced to spend the remainder of his life in hiding. The Welch national hero died in circa 1415.
