The transmission in a Saab holds approximately 8.5 quarts of fluid. The car is designed in such a way that even removing the front pan allows a person to only drain around 3.5 quarts of this fluid. Now! Where do you suppose is the balance five quarts? Well it's inaccessible as it's in the torque converter. The only way out is to refill the transmission, take your machine for a spin. Now drain the contents again, yes only 3.5 quarts, and refill it. You have a mixture of old and new, but this is the best you can do. Remember if you do not do this, then by just replacing 3.5 quarts of liquid will result in most of your fluid being old, making the entire exercise worthless. Try to avoid using any additives. At first add only about three quarts and no more. Warm the car, shift the transmission and flush out any air that has formed. Now refill the balance. An excess of fluid is as bad as having less fluid; so be careful.

Changing the transmission fluid on a classic 900 is not specified as a routine operation either in the owner's handbook or in the Haynes Owners Workshop Manual.
The automatic transmission casing, for instance, contains three different types of oil, namely engine oil, final drive oil and the automatic transmission fluid. Engine and final drive oil can be drained and replaced, but while there is a drain plug for automatic transmission fluid, draining is not recommended for the hobby mechanic or keen amateur. If you need to replace the transmission fluid, a Saab dealer is usually the only option.
What is recommended in the owners handbook and the workshop manual is regular checking of the fluid level. This should be done by idling the engine in P for a few minutes.
Switch off and withdraw and clean the transmission fluid dipstick. Replace and withdraw again, checking the level against the markers. Use the 'cold' marker if the engine and transmission are ld, and the 'hot' line if the engine and transmission have reached normal working temperature.
If necessary top up - via the dipstick filler tube - with the recommended automatic transmission fluid.
