Does Winchester Have A Museum?

Yes it does. Winchester City Museum has a series of new displays, which bring Wincester's nationally important story to life.

Admission for the museum is free, and its collections include archaeology, coins and medals, medicine, personalities, photography, social history and trade and commerce.

Facilities include a shop and disabled access. The museum is particularly interesting for archeaology and local history.

Highlights of the Collection include:

Anglo-Saxon decorative metalwork and sculpture.

Anglo-Saxon narrative frieze depicting the story of Sigmund in the Volsunga Saga.

Anglo-Saxon relief tiles.

Anglo-Saxon wall painting fragment on stone.

Anglo-Saxon walrus ivory panel which is carved with two angels.

Portable 9thC reliquary.

Reconstructed 19th and 20th century shops.

The museum is open from 1st April to 30th September and 1st October to 31 March every year. It is open from 10am until 5pm. The museum is always closed on New Year's Day, Good Friday and Christmas.

The museum, which opened in 1903, is due to have major refurbishment, with the roof being replaced. This was decided after a survey was carried out after leaks threatened exhibits.

The Venta Gallery on the upper floor of the museum will close during work, which is expected to be completed in July 2007. The rest of the museum will remain open to the public. A replacement roof will be needed along with scaffolding. Insulation in the Venta Gallery will be improved, following it being too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
