    The largest lake in the United States is Lake Superior situated in the North Western part of the country bordering the United States and Canada and is one of the Five Great Lakes; the others being Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario. It is the second largest lake in the World and the largest freshwater lake in terms of surface area at 31,700sq miles (82,100 sq km); the maximum length is 350 miles (563kms) and breadth is 160 miles (257kms); the average depth of the lake is 483 ft (147 m) with the deepest part being 1332ft (406 m).

    A number of rivers drain into the lake chief amongst them the Nipigon River and the St. Louis River; there are also places of tourist interest like the Lake Superior Provincial Park and the Isle Royale National Park the lake is surrounded by the states of Ontario and Minnesota along the Canadian border and by the states of Wisconsin and Michigan further south with the port of Duluth situated along its banks.
