How Does Strep Throat Affect Your Heart?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Strep throat is due to infection of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. The antigen markers of the streptococcus toxin is similar to the markers of the heart, particularly the heart valves. So during infection, your antibodies do not just attack the streptococcus bacteria, it also attacks your heart valves, which will eventually damage your heart. This disorder is called Rheumatic Heart Disease or Rheumatic Fever.
For you not to develop RHD, make sure to be very diligent in taking the full course of antibiotics prescribed during any streptococcus infection.
