Just have a sample of thing to keep in mind.
Manipulate colour. Use it (or the contrast between shade and sun) to enhance features, or to hide them, as you need.
Using contrasting colours to attract attention, and harmonious colours to divert it.
Using cool colours (lilac, light blue, light green) to make space look bigger.
Using bright colours (red, yellow, orange) to pull the eyes in certain directions.
Using lines to guide the eyes visually.
Using curved lines to give an illusion of extra space.
Balance out and distribute attractive elements in the landscape (don't put all the eye-catching features close together!).
Keep similar size of plants together. Don't plant trees that grow huge next to small buildings; similarly, don't plant small shrubs next to the large buildings. Put large trees next to big buildings, put very small plants around small but pretty features.
Make sure that the texture of paving and plant foliage are consistant and harmonious, in union with buildings or other features, too.
Identify client needs. Identify activity areas and passive areas. Plan how traffic will flow around, through and between these different types of areas.
Make sure conditions are right for plants chosen.
Put new plants far enough away from buildings (give them room to grow).
Choose appropriate height plants to screen unpleasant features.
Make sure that landscape maintenance will be as easy as possible. Simple designs are usually easier to maintain.
