What's The Best Way To Seal Wine Bottles - Natural Corks, Artificial Corks Or Screwcaps?
2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating
Basically for wines that we want to age, natural cork is the best choice, for wines that are meant to drink right away (or within 5 years) the stelvin or screw cap is the best. The artificial cork or rubber corks are never the BEST choice.

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that natural cork is completely airtight, which is why such a show is made of sniffing at the cork when a bottle of wine is opened at a restaurant - just to make sure it's OK.
And, equally unfortunately, natural cork can add to (but more usually) detract from the flavour of wine in a totally unpredictable manner.
New artificial corks, made from plastic polymers, create airtight seals that won't taint the wine inside the bottle - but still add some sort of ceremony to opening a bottle because you're still got to use a corkscrew. Best, though, not to sniff at an artificial cork because you'll just look like a wally if you do.
In practical terms, however - as opposed to aesthetic and traditional ones - the less-than-posh-looking screw cap wins hands down.
From the winemaker's point of view, sealing bottles with screw caps eliminates any chance of outside contamination ...
... and from the consumer's point of view, it's just so much easier to open a bottle whenever and wherever you want.
