How Do You Know When A Steak Is Done Cooking?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The best way to judge whether a steak is done or not is to use a meat thermometer if it is 125F then the steak will be rare, 135F then the steak will be medium, and 155F then the steak is well done. Some cut open the steak and check the colour but this only dries out the meat since the cooking juices of the steak drain out.

It is hard to tell if the steak is cooked simply by looking at it. Recipes on cooking steaks are most likely to be vague since the heat provided by various grills and stoves vary greatly. In general a rare steak should fell tender an offer no resistance to pressure. A medium and a well done steak should be firm. A good chef will acquire an accurate feel for the changing consistency of these different steaks.
