When Did The Mongols Decide To Invade Persia?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the year 1218 the Persians made an error from which they would never recover. The Persian ambassador of a province that existed in the region of Uzbekistan had members of a Mongol caravan tried/accused for treason and killed. The Mongols sent ambassadors to the Shah himself requesting that the governor be held accountable, but the foolish shah did the unthinkable. He underestimated the Mongols and had the emissaries killed. To the Mongols there were only a few things that were sacred apart from Genghis Khan, the eternal blue sky and Mongol life; and these were trade and ambassadors. The Mongol war machine changed direction and concentrated on Persia. Their target was the Shah. Any city or province that resisted or opposed the Mongol hunt was obliterated.

The Shah became an exile in his own lands and spent the remainder of his life fleeing from the Mongols. He died after having eaten poisonous berries on an island due to starvation when fleeing the Mongols. His companions could not even afford a shroud.
