Why Did Czechsolvakian Refugees Come To Canada?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In 1968, sick and tired of Soviet oppression, Czech students rebelled and opposed their masters.  Many demonstrations took place in the streets.  This eventually resulted in the Soviets invading the Czech Republic.

In 1969, in one of the most famous acts to defiance, a 21 year old student, Jan Palach, burned himself alive in public view as a protest about the way the Soviets were treating his country.

This turned him into a national hero.  It also started a trend for protesters to commit suicide in this awful way. Sadly such people are usually under a great deal of stress and possibly mentally unstable.

Many Czechs tried to escape the oppression in their country and moved abroad.  Many countries have received Czech refugees, not just Canada.

Canada is well known as a large country which is not overcrowded.  One can only assume that, as well as getting them a long way away from their oppressors, they felt that in a large country like Canada, they could fit in well.

In 1969 at the World Championship, with Russian tanks in Prague, the Russian ice-hockey team met the most motivated team to ever step onto the ice - the Czech team! They hadn't a hope. The Czechs were unstoppable and won a historic victory.
