The food is the easiest thing to cut back on and save you money. Do you know somebody that can do it for you cheaper than a caterer? Can you make a cake instead of buying one? Also serving dishes such as chicken or pasta is a lot cheaper than serving any exotic food. You can cut out starters and offer a buffet instead of a three course meal.

While it may seem cheeky, you could always ask each guest to bring along some alcohol and then that would save on drinks. If you do have a bar at the reception, you could choose to only have it open for a certain amount of time.

Sometimes by booking the reception venue early, you can save money and sometimes they knock off the price per person for the meal if you are having one. Also by not having as many guests at your reception will really cut down the costs considerably. However, many people tend to have less people at the wedding and more at the reception so it all depends on which way around you want to do it.

You can make a reception really interesting by not going for the usual expensive items but by using a good deal of imagination and buying in bulk from a wholesaler or special offers at some supermarkets.
