Can I Do My Own Conveyancing When I Sell Or Buy Private Residential Property In England And Wales?

Answer Question

Yes you can, but unless you have relevant legal training, you need to be very careful about it.  There usually is on the market at least one understandable DIY conveyancing guidebook.  You will need such a volume as your bible.  It will guide you through the process, explaining what the roles of buyer/seller's conveyancers are, and how to undertake each step along the way.    It will also tell you when NOT to DIY-conveyance; for instance, when the other side is DIY-conveyancing.  It's just too risky that one of you will get something important wrong.

The guidebook will definitively also tell you that DIY conveyancing is only safe to do as long as the transaction is relatively straightforward.  If anything unusual happens during the conveyancing process, you should swiftly seek legal advice from an experienced and trained professional.   Most purchases of residential property in the UK are fairly problem-free, but all sorts of things can go wrong along the way, and when they do, you will need expert help.
