Well your first priority should be a new RAM but if you can't then try one of these two options.
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously, select the processes options and from there close the unnecessary processes.
    2. Second option is that click on the Start, write "msconfig" in the run box, from there select startup button and uncheck the programs which you don't want to run in the background while you are working on others.

Before you merrily kill off all the big processes, first identify them; they might be critical system processes which you don't want to kill. They might also be viruses, which need to be permanently removed using an AV utility.

If the RAM is being used up for legitimate reasons (ie, you're running applications that require lots of memory) then you will need to install more RAM.

Programs that run in the background are started up in three different ways:

      • As a system service.  On the desktop, right-click on 'My Computer', select 'Manage'.  In the 'Computer Management' dialog, click on 'Services' inside 'Services and Applications'.  You can see which services are started automatically, but don't disable any unless you really know that you don't need them!  There are a lot of core system processes started here.
      • In the registry, there is a 'Run' key that may list applications loaded at startup.  These applications should only run and stop soon afterwards, but they may just keep running and keep consuming memory.
      • In your (or All Users) 'Startup' folder.  Navigate there by clicking on 'Start':'Programs':'Startup' and there they are.

Use intelligence when deciding whether to stop an application or service to start.  Also, use a Web search to find out more about a particular application, process or service; it may help you decide whether or not you need it running!

You can go to a store such as Walmart and buy an external hard drive. They can be a bit pricey, but they are very good! If you don't want to risk losing important things such as paperwork or pictures, you can put them on the external hard drive and you won't lose them if the computer crashes. Also, this clears up space on the computer itself, allowing it to speed up.

You need more RAM, not a bigger hard disk. Virtual memory does use the hard disk, but you really shouldn't be using virtual memory at all; it is exceedingly slow.
