How Do You Make Piñ¡´¡s?

The traditional piñata is the Cinco de Mayo version, a six-point star made of papier-mâché and containing sweets, although other shapes, such as donkeys and people can also be made. For the star, you will need to follow these instructions: first, fold six sections of a newspaper in half, and role each into a cone, securing at the end with masking tape, and ensuring that all the cones are about the same size. Then, cut the bottoms off the cones, and inflate a 12 inch balloon, sealing it at the base. After making some papier-mâché paste, cut some more newspaper into 1 to 2 inch wide strips and dip into the paste before applying to the balloon. This should be repeated until the balloon is completely covered. Then, place the cones to the balloons, cover with strips of paper using the paste, which will also hold the cones to the balloon. Once the paste has dried, cut a small hole in the top of the piñata and the cones, and fill with sweets or small toys.

It is possible to make really cool pinatas at home itself. You would need a big inflated balloon, a 10-inch bowl, old newspapers, papier-mache paste, thin cardboard, tape, Crayons or markers, tissue paper or construction paper, string or yarn for making a pinata. Place the balloon in the bowl. Then split the newspapers into strips of 1 inch wide and 6 inch length. Then apply papier-mâché to the strips and attach them to the balloon until it is entirely covered an allow it to dry.

Then take a string or yarn and tie it at the bottom of the balloon. Then tape the balloon at a few places and knot them together. Now take comic strips and apply them to the balloon at different angle and again allow it to dry. Now add a third layer to make it stronger. The next step is to cut a 2-inch square hole at the top with three sides. Decorate it according to your imagination and creativity. Then fill it up halfway with candy, trinkets and gifts trough the hole. Seal the hole and decorate it some more to cover the hole. Your pinata is read. Hang it up from the ceiling or a tree branch.
