The Hampstead Heath is one such open area which is located four miles from the centre of London. It has around 25 ponds and swimming is allowed in some of them.

It also has woodlands, bogs, and grasslands with the total area spanning across 791 acres which includes two boroughs. The administration of the area has been a part of the responsibility of the Corporation of London except the part that is in Kenwood area, since 1989. The London borough of Camden has 681 acres and the London Borough of Barnet has 110 acres. The other 112 acres are at Kenwood and is maintained by English Heritage.

One notable fact is that Hampstead Heath has got the Green Flag Award for seven consecutive years. The Green Flag Award is an award to recognize the best green spaces in the United Kingdom.
