This usually occurs when a casualty has been exposed to cold conditions over a long period of time. Among the various causes are: prolonged immersion in cold water, as occurs in ship wreck; in adequate clothing or insulation against cold weather, as often occurs in climbing accidents (its likelihood is greatly increased if the clothes become wet, or if there is a cold wind); or general exposure to cold, as in an inadequately heated room- regrettably fairly common in elderly even in this age.
Some of the sign and symptoms of hypothermia are as follows:
These are progressive and listed below in chronological order.
-Casualty usually complains of being very very cold and tired.
-you would notice that a person showing symptoms of hypothermia would have a pale skin, except infants who may look pink and healthy.
-Skin feels very cold when touched
-Another oblivious symptom is shivering
-When shivering ceases it is replaced by lack of muscular coordination; slurred speech; blurred vision; irrational behavior
-There is a falling pulse and breathing rate in the casualty
-In extreme cases there is unconsciousness with only faintly detectable breathing and heartbeat.

Hypothermia can be fatal. Recognizing early symptoms can prevent it.
