New Orleans is situated in south-eastern Louisiana along the Mississippi River. The city shares its borders with Lake Pontchartain towards the north and with the Gulf of Mexico towards the east.
La Nouvelle-Orleans was established in the year 1718 by the French Mississippi Company, under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The city of New Orleans is said to have the lowest altitude in the state of Louisiana. According to the census report of 2000, the total area of this region is said to be 907 square kilometres out of which 467.6 square kilometres is land and 439.4 square kilometres is covered by water.
The census report also stated that the average population of the city was 484,674 having a density of 2,518 per square mile.
