Many sea animals can move quickly, and a lava flow only impacts the area it flows into. But for those that can't, they will not do well. Lava flows boil the water. Ash plumes not only contaminate the water with debris, but the ash can change the pH of the water in small areas, like in a tide pool. But life goes on, and reproduction rates usually ensure survival of the species. Volcanoes aren't the only thing that damages the environment, human activity does a lot of damage too.
