Yes, Marlborough certainly used to be the main route to London from Bath.

Marlborough is a quite an ancient place and the sign of human habitation can be found in Marlborough College ground. These are the burial site of Merlin and the name of the county itself is being derived from Merlin borough or Marlborough.

The county is famous for its Marlborough Bucket and other historical remains that were found nearby at Mildenhall, situated two miles east of Marlborough. The written history of Marlborough can be traced in 1087 with the end of the Doomsday Book. The charter of the town was received by it in the year 1204.

The town is also famous for the mint that was established by William and that was the start of the silver pennies William I and II. The name of the town was there on the coin as Maerlebi or Maerleber.
