I Have 2petRats Both Female. 1's OK, Other1 Bites(hard). What Is The Best Thing To Do? She Has Bitten Me&my Partner Several Times Now.
We bought these 2 rats from Pets At Home before we knew too much about buying rats. Anybody's help on this matter is greatly appreciated. We don't want to get rid of her if there's anything we can do to stop it, but we are both thinking this is the only option. Many thanks!
That sounds prettty unusual, especially for females. Rats are extremely sociable animals normally, so I think you should try to handle your biting rat as much as possible. Maybe a pair of stout leather gloves will help to alleviate your injuries? Lots of petting should help to settle her down.
She should also respond positively to being rewarded with an occasional treat, especially if she manages to behave herself for a while.
Try also to spot any patterns: Is she only likely to bite when her sister (presumably they're sisters?) is around, or have you just woken her up from a deep sleep?
we both handle both the rats as much as possible, and for the first month or so she was absolutely fine, we always take them out for 20minutes or so each night when we get in from work, sometimes more than once a night. we're also always rewarding them with a nice treat too when they do anything we ask, like after they've been out & been good, soon as they go back we treat them. yes, they're sisters (as far as the shop could tell us) - one bite was when she'd just woken up, the others have been when she's been up for a while, not really any patterns to them at all.
thanks for your advice though. is there anything else we could try?
