Calais is a small town situated near the northern France. The total population of the town is approximately 77,333 according to the census conducted in the year 1999. Where as the population of the entire metropolitan area are 125,584. There are many tourist attractions in Calais and many ancient places worth seeing.
The previous part of the town, Calais proper is based on an artificial island which is bounded by canals and harbours. The contemporary part of the town St Pierre is situated towards the south and the south-east.
Even till today the origin of Calais is difficult to understand. It was discovered as a fishing village some time before the 10th century. Around 997 it was enhanced and developed by the Count of Flanders. It was later fortified by the Count of Blouge in 1224.
