Does Water Mint Actually Grow In The Water Or On Banks?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Water mint or Mentha aquatica grows on damp ground and sometimes even in water. It is a plant of fresh water margins and is sometimes partially or completely submerged. If found growing in water it generally rises above the surface. It can be found in the margins, wet places and channels of rivers, streams, ditches, canals, wet meadows, marshes and fens.

It is common in most of Europe except the extreme north and is a perennial plant. Since it requires wet soil but can grow under water, it actually grows on both banks and in the water. It grows in most soils as long as the soil is not too dry but is best suited to heavy clay soil. It prefers sunlight but adapts to shades as well. It can grow in water which is up to 15 cm deep.  Water mint roots are known to spread extensively.
