The ancient town of Verona was among the important places in the Roman Empire; the region was conquered by the Romans in about 300 BC. Due to its strategic location in northeastern Italy, it lay at the intersection of several roads that opened out in to the Italian Peninsula as well as Central Europe the town was always well fortified in Roman times.

Verona was the preferred place for relaxation of Julius Caesar (100 BC-44 BC) the architect of the Roman Empire. The city was home to several recreational activities, the Roman theatre was one of the popular attractions of the town. It is presumed that Julius Caesar visited the town of Verona on several occasions mainly to unwind between various campaigns.

The town housed several monuments like the Arena a Roman amphitheatre where gladiatorial contests and other games and shows took place and which is still in use today mainly to host musical concerts. The Arena was built in 30 AD after the time of Caesar; it is one of the largest of its kind in Italy and can house about 25,000 spectators at a time.
