Which Boxer Was Called ´The Celtic Warrior´?

Answer Question

The Celts have long been considered to be a pugilistic race, with Mel Gibson memorably calling the people, Warrior Poets.  One famed boxer who certainly earned his nickname was Steve Collins, otherwise known as The Celtic Warrior.

Steve Collins was born in Dublin, Ireland and fought during the golden age of Middleweight boxing in the Eighties and Nineties.  Amongst his most memorable fights were his victories over Nigel Benn (twice) and Chris Eubank.  He was also widely considered to be one of the toughest boxers of all time having never been stopped, and certainly the hardest pound-for-pound fighter of his era.  This is borne out by the 26 Irish titles he won at junior heavyweight, light-heavyweight and middleweight, along with his world title, of course!

Many feel that Steve's career suffered by not have the defining fight he craved: Roy Jones Jnr.  Despite Steve going to America and knocking on Roy Jones´ house asking for the fight and an agreement from the Jones camp that the fight would take place at Celtic Park, it never materialized.

Ever the warrior, Steve is reported to have said that he has spent so long chasing Roy Jones Jr that money is not important anymore and that he would fight him in a phone box in front of two men and a dog… a warrior to the end!
