The best definition of reactive power, which I come across, is:

The power that constantly bounces back and forth between the main supply and the destination is called reactive power and it is denoted by "Q". Reactive power stands for the power that is initially saved and then released in inductor or in capacitor. It is measured in volt-amp reactive (VAR).
