What Is Electric Brae?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Electric Brae is the name of a stretch of road which runs on a hill on the A719 between Dunure and Croy Bay in Ayrshire, Scotland.  On this hill Ð with care Ð you can stop your car, leave the handbrake and foot brakes off and your car will roll up the hill.

It was originally thought to be a phenomenon caused by electric or magnetic attraction that caused cars to roll up the hill. Unfortunately this was proved not to be the case. It is an optical illusion. The land on either side of the road is aligned in such a way that the slope appears to be going in the opposite direction, so the car is infact rolling downhill.

Similar roads and illusions have also been found.

    Aston Clinton Ð Aylesbury, England
Gravity Hill -  Moonbi, Australia and Bedford County, Pennsylvania, USA
    Magnetic Hill -  Canada
Spook Hill Ð Lake Wales, Florida USA

The name Electric Brae was also used as the title of a novel by Andrew Greig
