Al-kindi's full name is Abu Yousuf Yaqub Ibn Ishaq Al-kindi. He was born at Kufa in 800 C.E. His father was an official of Haroon Al-Rashid. Al-kindi was an eminent Philosopher, Mathematician, Physicist, Astronomer, Physician, Geographer and a wonderful Musician.
Abu Yousuf Yaqub Ibn Ishaq Al-kindi was a contemporary of al-Mamun, al Mu'tasim and al-Mutawakkil. He flourished largely in Baghdad.
Abu Yousuf Yaqub Ibn Ishaq Al-kindi wrote about 230 books. Out of these, sixteen books are on Astronomy, eleven books are on Arithmetic, thirty-two books are on Geography, twenty-two books are on Medicine, twelve books are on Physics, twenty-two books are on Philosophy, nine books are on Logic, five books on Psychology and seven books on Music.
Abu Yousuf Yaqub Ibn Ishaq Al-kindi wrote in many Monographs, mostly about Tides, Astronomical Instruments, Rocks, Precious stones etc. Al-kindi is known as Alkindiu in Latin. Gherard of Cremona translated many of Al-kindi's books in Latin.
Al-kindi was against the concept of Alchemy. The concept that cheep base metals like copper and tin can be changed into precious metals like Gold and Silver is called Alchemy and the person practising this belief is called Alchemist. Al-kindi believed that cheep metals couldn't be changed into expensive metals by chemical reaction. He was of the belief that no chemical reaction can change one element into another.
Because of his contributions in above mentioned fields, Abu Yousuf Yaqub Ibn Ishaq Al-kindi was given the title of 'Philosopher of the Arabs'. This great Musician, Scholar and Scientist died in 873 C.E. during the reign of Al-M'utamid.
