On What True Story Is "Open Water 2:Adrift" Based?

No one seems to be able to say on what true story this movie is based. Does anyone know on which true story the movie/dramatization is based, or if it truly is?

I have not yet seen the movie you speak of, however, I have seen the original movie entitled, Open Water, which was based on a true story of a couple who vacationed in the Bahamas and met their demise after being erroneously left at sea on a dive trip.  I hope this helps ya sweetie...nassy

Oh that first one was creepy!---what a scary feeling to be abandoned at sea!!! I haven't seen the second one either--guess it's a similar story--. I heard the second one's based on a true story too, but don't know if I really want to see it or not... Like I said, creepy feeling! Thanks for your answer, Nassy--good to see you back!

It is not really based on a true story.
It is actually based on the short story "Adrift" by Koji Suzuki, from the novel Dark Water

OPEN WATER 2 isn't based on a true story.  It's based on the short story ADRIFT which is from a collection of short stories called DARK WATER (which is also where the movie DARK WATER starring Jennifer Connelly comes from)
