What Is The Origin Of The Name SMITH?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    This is a cool question.
I looked it up because I always thought it had it's origin from people that made things, which is right. It was very popular for blacksmiths to have this as a last name.
The word is derived from smitan which means to strike or to smite. It is English but there are others that have it because of the mixing of cultures in America and also the slave owners would often give their slaves their last names (I guess that's still a mixing of cultures). About 1% of the populations in England, USA, and Australia have this last name. Read this to find out more information on the name Smith.
