Why Is Pearl Harbour Famous?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Pearl harbour is famous as being the reason that the United States entered the Second World War.  On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese carried out a bombing raid on Pearl Harrbour and effectively attacked the United States' battleship force.
The US then had no option but to join the Second World War.
Germany, Italy and Japan had signed a treaty in September 1940, which meant that Japan's actions brought the US in direct conflict not just with Japan but Germany and Italy also.
Without the aid of the US it is unlikely that the war would have been won by the Allies.  However, Japan was desperate for oil and minerals and it needed to expan southwards.  This is why it attacked Pear Harbour.
The British had been trying to urge the US to become involved in the war, but President Roosevelt was reluctant, although he gave Britain significant financial aid and in 1940 he presented 50 destroyers to Britain.  But after Pearl Harbour, there was no choice left about remaining outside the conflict in Europe.
