How Long Is The Lena River?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Lena River rising in Siberia from the mountains near Lake Baikal is the 10th longest river in the world with a length of 4,400 km (2,734 miles). The river originates in the southern part of Siberia and traverses the length of the region before emptying in to the Laptev Sea, a part of the Arctic Ocean in Northern Siberia.

The Lena has formed a large delta at its mouth about 400 km (250 miles) wide which is barren for most of the year and transforms in to a wetland for a brief period in the month of May. The chief tributaries of the river are the Kirenga, the Vitim, the Olyokma and the Aldan River.

The Lena delta is noted for its gold bearing property found in the sands along the river as well as its importance from an archeological point of view as fossils like mammoth tusks have been excavated from the delta. Yakutsk is an important city lying on the banks of the river in North-eastern Siberia.
