Meningitis is potentially a very serious illness for which medical treatment should be sought as early as possible. It is basically an inflammation of the membranes which surround the brain and spinal cord. These membranes are called the meninges.
meningitis can either be viral or bacterial. If the illness is viral it is not as serious as the bacterial meningitis.
The bacterial meningitis is very contagious and is treated by antibiotics being given on a drip. These antibiotics are exceptionally strong and the course may last for two weeks, to ensure that the bacterial infection is completely killed off. Corticosteroids may also be given to prevent hearing damage from occurring.
If the meningitis is caused by a virus then this cannot be treated by antibiotics, since they are not effective againsta virus. The treatment is usually that the body will heal itself after a few days, but this type of meningitis is usually not severe.
