It is an international amateur athlete competition which takes place every fourth year in different countries all over the world. The international Olympic committee decides. The name is derived from the national athletic festival held at Olympic (776 B.C – 394 A.D.) in honor of Zeus by the ancient Greeks.

In those days, every Greek youth was extremely ambitious for a win and distinction, besides great wealth. In the games, no slaves, foreigners and dishonored persons were not allowed to participate and women were disallowed even to witness these games. These Olympic Games became defunct in the 4th century A.D. The games were revived in 1896, when 8 countries took part. It was Baron de Coubertin, a French noble man, who was responsible in reviving the Olympic Games.

He was firmly of the belief that friendly international competitions might teach the youth of the world international under-standing.
