    There are two arguments here.

The first is that American servicemen and women are dying unnecessarily every day on the streets of Iraq (and Afghanistan). The American people are paying for a war that most of them are now entirely against. There is no way of winning in this situation because the insurgents are deeply part of the Iraqi culture. It's almost as if they didn't learn the lessons of Vietnam. Insurgents and terrorists, do not engage in man on man fighting in open fields.

However, it seems rather hypocritical to begin a war and then to leave after you've stirred up a hornet's nest in that country because it's costly and because people are dying. It would be rather foolish to expect anything less than a deeply involved conflict.

I believe that the only reason that President Bush will veto this bill is that he needs to remain in control of the war, but leaving Iraq, might do his popularity some good.
