Yes, Sunderland is a city, an industrial city with a big port in north east coast of England. It is in the English metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear. The city itself was formed by joining some of the districts of the county of Durham.
It includes the former borough of Sunderland as well as Washington, Houghton-le-spring and Hetten-le-hole. This district city has a population of about 300,000 with the people living in the city of Sunderland being popularly known as Mackems.
It is the largest city between Edinburgh and Leeds and has access to some of the most beautiful countryside landscapes in England. Sunderland's name was probably derived from the sunder-land, the land divided by the river which was granted to Benedict Biscop in AD 686.
This port city has a long tradition of culture and heritage spanning more than 800 years, at present it is administered by the city council. The city has the earliest evidence of maritime commerce and industry has always continued to grow along the rivers of the city. Docks were developed here in the year 1382 itself.
