Who Influenced Pomponio Nenna?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

One of Pomponio Nenna's most famous contemporaries was the Prince of Venosa, Carlo Gesualdo (March 8, 1560–September 8, 1613), who was also known as Gesualdo da Venosa. Gesualdo, who was almost four years younger than Nenna and died 44 days before him, was believed to have been one of his earliest influences. Nenna also briefly worked for Gesualdo and was believed to have borrowed heavily from the latter. He did not want to compete with Gesualdo because the latter did not only hail from an aristocratic family, but had also earned notoriety for the murder of Fabrizio Carafa, the Duke of Andria, while Carafa was in bed with Gesualdo's wife. Nenna dedicated his book of madrigals to Carafa, but later, there was an ironic twist in the tale, and Nenna befriended Gesualdo, even though he was Carafa's murderer. Carafa had tipped Nenna to be his successor.
