The International Maritime Organisation (abbreviated as the IMO) was set up in the year 1948. It has its headquarters in London in the United Kingdom. It was set up to review the shipping regulations and introduce new rules after the sinking of the Titanic in the year 1912.

The IMO is the body that takes the overall decisions about the designing, construction and safety equipment of all the ships belonging to every country in the world. There was a proposal for an organisation called the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (abbreviated as IMCO) to be set up for this purpose earlier, but its establishment was postponed after World War I and revived after World II. They made a set of regulations known as Safety of Life At Sea (abbreviated as SOLAS), which were modified from time to time to adapt to changes in technology. One set of regulations introduced by the IMO is the International Regulated for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
