What Does Span Mean?

    Span means "width and extent of a thing."  Span can be defined as a total duration of something. For example, "The activity was finished in a span of two hours. " The synonyms of the word "span "are length, reach, stretch, extent, period etc.  Span can also mean an interval or a stretch of distance between two points.

    Two items of the same type (like pair, couple, two some etc) are also known as span.  A span also refers to a bridge or a structure that allows people or vehicles to traverse over a big water body like a river.  

    Here are the examples of the word "span" in a couple of sentences: The bridge runs along the span of 2 kilometres.

    The life span of an average human being is about 70 years. The word "span" is believed to have entered popular English literature for the first time in beginning of the 11th century.
