Consolidation basically means to combine.  For example, if you have more than one credit with a balance, you can consolidate or combine them to make one monthly payment.

In business terminology, consolidation means the mergers or the acquisitions of a number of smaller companies into the larger organizations. For example, if the central bank in an economy passes the law according to which the banks of a specific worth and capital can only operate then the smaller banks can collaborate and go for consolidation to survive in the economy.

Consolidation means to 'strengthen' or to 'make strong' a certain disposition or a desired situation in a positive and constructive way in order to reflect a desired future vision in consistence with the individual or communal goals of a certain society. It is used especially as an abstract depicting the strengthening of a desired situation in terms of politics, science or any other discipline whenever there is a discussion of exemplifying an interest group's agenda or a scholastic attribute. Some examples of it's usage are :-

        1) We need to consolidate ties with our allies in order to garner strength and respect in the international communities.

        2) The presence of consistent ideologies consolidates a society's position in it's survival and ensures it's longevity.

Taking multiple debt or credit lines and consolidating them into one
new payoff plan. Frequently, this is a consolidation loan, provided to
consolidate debts into one loan with one payment, typically shifting
credit card debts to secured debt by refinancing a mortgage. It could
also refer to a credit counseling or debt settlement program.
