What Are The Main Towns In Wiltshire?

Other than Swindon there are not many large towns.  Swindon is the business and commercial centre and used to be home to the Great Western Railway works.  The works closed a large part of the operation in the late 1970's affecting the large workforce employed there.

Salisbury has a cathedral with the tallest spire in the UK at 123 metres and is pleasantly situated on the edge of Salisbury Plain and close to Stonehenge.

Devizes has the Kennet and Avon Canal, constructed at the turn of the 18th century and which provided links with London and Bristol, and mainly used for leisure pursuits today.

Chippenham, still a market town but now with a growing number of commuters choosing a rural retreat but just 4 miles from the M4 motorway and possessing a mainline station to London Paddington.

Trowbridge is the county town with a population of around 28,000 and still regarded as a sleepy backwater.
