    This is the female line which is followed through the mother's line.

    For example if you were searching for granparents and succesive generations from whom you and your Mother were related you would be following the matrilinear line.

    In some societies inheritance is follwed through the matrilinear line . The Picts, an ancient people who inhabited parts of Scotland are thought to have followed the femail line for sucession of their rulers.
