Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cartilage is a type of dense tissue that is composed of cells that are dispersed in a firm gel-like ground substance that is called the "Matrix".

Cartilage is found in the joints and one purpose of it is to provide a smooth surface for the movement of articulating bones.  It is found in the rib cage, the ear, the nose, the throat, and between intervertebral disks.

There are 3 types of cartilage - hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage.

Hyaline cartilage is found lining the bones in joints, Elastic Cartilage is found in the ear and Fibrocartilage (also called white cartilage) is found in areas requiring tough support or great tensile strength.

There are several diseases that can affect the cartilage.  Many of these affect the bones in joints and cause pain to those who suffer.
