    Falaise is in Normandy

William the Conqueror was born in Falaise in December 1027. to Arlette of Falaise and Robert the Mgnificent, Duke of Normandy.

As the invasion of England approached over 15,000 troops were assembled . Angevins,Bretons, Flemmings, Picards, Poitevins and Normans from Sicily gathered to prepare for the invasion.

Along the coast of Normandy ship-building workshops were set up to construct over 500 vessels for the invasion.

The finest of the ships was the Mora - given by Matilda, wife of William and capable of carrying 600 men.

On 10th September 1066 ' a forest of masts' set sail to covey ovr 15,000 men, 3,000 horses and equipment to the coast of England.

The Falaise Roll lists the original knights who accompanied William at the Battle of Hastings.
Many of the names of those original men now form many of the surnames of the British isles today although their origins are long forgotten.
