A double bass also known as the standup bass, it is said to be the largest and the lowest pitched bowed string instrument which is used in the modern symphony orchestra. The double bass is very widely used in the western classical music and also in the string section of the symphony orchestras and in various other small string ensembles. In addition to this the double bass is also used in various other genres of music such as, blues, rock n roll, rockabilly, psychobilly and jazz and also in bluegrass. Like many other stringed instruments the double bass is played with the technique of a bow (Arco) or by the alternative technique of plucking the strings, this technique is also known as pizzicato.

Double Bass can also refer to the Double Bass drumming technique or the Double Bass pedals which are used mostly in the genre of heavy metal.
