El Torcal is the name of the Nature Reserve that sits on the outskirts of Antequera. The park is the best known and most beautiful natural beauty spot in the Antequera region. It is made up of a huge expanse of natural rock formations that create a surreal fantasy dreamscape that visitors can enjoy. Look carefully at the rocks and you can see formations that accidentally resemble everything from snails to waving hands to Winnie-the-pooh!
It is believed that the Nature Reserve was raised to its present altitude over 200 million years ago. It receives over 100,000 visitors a year, and there are no access restrictions. There are two different walks that be completed, which clearly state the difficulty level and time needed to complete, though both are fine for children and the elderly.
Walking around El Torcal feels at times like being in an Amazonian rainforest, at other times in some wild mountain range. Though it is popular, you can walk around without seeing any other visitors which gives the place a magical feel. The miradors or viewing points give excellent views over the Antequera region and birds of prey can be seen flying overhead. It is well worth going in the morning before it gets too hot so the walk can be comfortably enjoyed.
