What Is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's disease is a chronic, inflammatory disease which affects the digestive tract. There is no specific area that it targets within the digestive tract, it could be anywhere from the mouth to the anus. It is common for it to affect the terminal ileum and the demarcated areas of the large bowel. It is unusual for any other part of the bowel to be affected.

It is a systemic disease which causes complications outside the gastrointestinal tract, which could lead to symptoms such as diarrhoea and abdominal pain. There could also be symptoms that occur outside of the gastrointestinal tract including arthritis, skin rashes and ulcers in the mouth.

The true cause of the disease is not actually known, however it is thought that it is an autoimmune disease. It could be triggered by environmental factors and once you have the disease, there is no medical or surgical cure available. There are treatments that can keep the disease in remission however so if you have any worries at all do not be afraid to talk to your doctor.

Crohn's disease is a life altering disease of the bowels.  It is ulcers that form in the digestive track and when the inflammation and ulcers heal then it forms scar tissue on the inside of the intestines.  If the scar tissue gets thick enough then it can cause a  blockage of the intestines.  This has to be taken care of by surgery.  Before it gets that bad though the doctor usually gives you a medication to take the inflammation down in the bowels.  Another problem with Crohn's Disease is that the person can't digest their food properly so they can suffer from malnutrition and need tube feeding or supplemental feedings.  People with Crohn's Disease can also develop a type of arthritis and skin problems. The arthritis is caused because of the inflammation process and it causes your joints to inflame which causes pain and stiffness in your joints.

Crohn's disease is featured by an inflammation and discomfort experienced in the intestinal tract. It is associated with dysfunction nature of the tract. It also involves swelling sensation within the intestine, especially in the small one. Crohn's disease is a chronic disease and the symptoms of Crohn's disease can be alleviated but there is no proper medication invented to treat Crohn's disease till today. It's because the underlying cause of disease could not be found. Few studies suggested that there may be a strong correlation among the immune disorder and the prevalence of Crohn's disease.

The primary symptoms of Crohn's disease include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, loss of interest in food, loss of weight and fatigue. The abdominal pain may resemble with the pain of appendicitis. In severe condition, it may result into obstruction in intestinal tract, abscess formation and fistula formation.

Crohn's disease may occur in association with other diseases such as arthritis, facial ulcer, skin infection, inflammation in the eyes, live, kidney, gallbladder and intestine infection.
