What Money Is Best To Use In Cuba?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

You should use Cuban Convertible Pesos or Cuban Pesos when travelling and shopping in Cuba. US Dollars were widely accepted in tourist establishments, especially certain resorts, hotels and some restaurants, but this practice was all but ended in the 1990s with the introduction of the Convertible Peso.

Since 2004, it is no longer possible to pay for goods and services in US Dollars and it may also be a good idea to bring another major currency with you when travelling to Cuba, as many exchange offices will charge a 10% fee for converting American currency. For this reason, it is advisable to carry Canadian Dollars or Euros when travelling to Cuba. Additionally, try to limit your use of credit cards while in Cuba, as you will be charged a 3% fee for all transactions.

While most tourists use convertible pesos for the majority of their purchases, Cubans tend to use the country's other official currency, the 'National Peso.' Neither currency, however, is exchanged in other countries.
