Kenneth Grahame, author of the famous Wind in the Willows, was also the bank of England's Secretary. Kenneth had just retired as Secretary when in 1908 he published his world-famous book, destined to become one of the greatest of all children's classics.
To his former colleagues at the bank, the news came as a surprise. Kenneth was always known as a quiet and shy man and hardly the sort of person who would write about the amusing tales of a mole, a rat and a toad!
Kenneth was born on July 20th, 1859 in Edinburgh Scotland and was the son of a lawyer. His parents died when he was very young and he was brought up by his grandmother.
Despite his conventional job, Kenneth found a release from the daily grind of working in the bank buy imagining all sorts of adventures for Moley, ratty and Mr Toad. He said of his writings that if ever he became so famous so as his privacy would be disrupted, he would not write again. True to his word, after the publication success of his early books, he didn't write any further books up to his death on July 6th 1932. Two other books by Kenneth are The Golden Age and Dream Days, which appear in The Reluctant Dragon – another work of Kenneth Grahame.
