Well...that sort of depends on what food spoiled, how much of it spoiled, and how bad a smell it left behind.
What I would do is empty the fridge, dispose of any suspicious food, and take the shelf-racks out. Run those through the dishwasher as they might be holding on to some food that may have also spilled and spoiled. Next, wash all the inside surfaces of the refrigerator with a solution of mild soap and bleach. A good healthy squeeze of whatever dish liquid you use is fine. Add about 3 ounces (enough to fill a small yogurt container to about 1/2) of regular laundry bleach. After you wash the entire inside, rinse the sponge and give the inside another quick wipe to remove any excess soap and bleach, and that should be that. It is also a good idea to wipe up spills as soon as they happen so that they don't have the opportunity to smell up your fridge.
Two things: 1) It is a good idea to do this every 6 months or so, not just when you notice that the fridge is starting to smell bad. 2) If it is taking your family so long to eat what you cook that what you cook spoils in the fridge, maybe it's time to find a few new recipes. ;-)
Hope this helps.
